Resources to Help You Understand and Work with Your ADHD Neurotype
You’ll find different types of online resources here that can help you understand and work with your ADHD neurotype.
I’ve tried to make sure to only include resources that are neurodiversity-affirmative. This means that the tools and the strategies are designed to support you to find ways to work with your brain, rather than trying to fix your brain.
Working With Your Interest-Based Nervous System – Article by Megan Anna Neff
I really like this article by Megan Neff, an Autistic-ADHD psychologist. She explains how ADHD is about having an interest-based nervous system, compared to the more neurotypical importance-based nervous system.
She outlines some ways to approach working with your nervous-system, knowing that things like play, passion, interest, novelty, competition and cooperation tend to be very important for an ADHD neurotype.
How ADHD Shapes Your Perceptions, Emotions and Motivation – Presentation by Dr. William Dodson
Despite this being just a long Powerpoint presentation of a talk I haven’t even heard, I found it really engaging and interesting. The message is the same as in Dr. Neff’s article above – working with your interest-based nervous system – but with more background and research findings.
You’ll learn more about the concept of an interest-based nervous system and how neurotypical strategies just don't work for an ADHD system. From slide 52 Dr. Dodson starts talking about how to create your own ADHD Manual with techniques and strategies that work for you, and then lists some different strategies.
How to ADHD – Youtube channel by Jessica McCabe
Hundreds of videos on ADHD tools and support, and a community of 1.7 million subscribers – this must be the biggest ADHD-themed channel on Youtube.
Divergent Conversations Podcast
This is a podcast by Dr. Megan Anna Neff and Patrick Casale, two neurodivergent therapists. They explore neurodivergence, mental health and talk about their own experiences of being autistic and ADHD.
ADDept – Website by Marcy Caldwell
This website by a clinical psychologist is a great resource for ADHD-friendly strategies. The articles also cover topics linked to mental health and common issues that often show up alongside ADHD.
